Sign Language Interpreter

Reports To: Principal and Director of Special Education FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Job Goal: To provide equal access to classroom instruction and school-sponsored activities for Deaf and hard of hearing students through accurate interpretation of spoken and signed communication, in accordance with the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP), Section 504 Plan, or Communication Plan and in compliance with FAPE provisions under IDEA or the requirements of Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act of 1973.Qualifications: High School Diploma or equivalent. Must hold a current license or permit issued by the Alabama Licensure Board for Interpreters and Transliterators (ALBIT). Job Responsibilities (include but are not limited to): Provide expressive and voice interpreting which may include American Sign Language (ASL), Pidgin Signed English (PSE), or other communication modalities as specified in the student's IEP, 504 Plan, or Communication Plan.Assist the student with reviewing or reinforcing instructional content and note taking services for hearing impaired students when interpreting is not needed. Serves as a member of the IEP team, providing input on the student's communication access needs, and participate in the development and review of the IEP when interpretation services are discussed.Provides interpreting for academic classes and required school functions during regular school hours. Interpreting outside of scheduled school hours (e.g., extracurricular events, after-school programs) may be arranged separately with advanced notice and is not considered a default part of the regular assignment.Maintains strict confidentiality and complies to the Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf (RID) Code of Professional Conduct, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) guidelines, Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA), and all district policies. Acts as a liaison to promote good public relations between the student with hearing impairment, their hearing peers, administrators, staff, and faculty members.Collaborates with regular/general education teacher(s) and Teacher of the Deaf/Hearing Impaired to better prepare for interpreting services and the individual needs of the student. Maintains and improves signing ability and interpreting skills, to develop a better understanding of the educational process through participation in an ongoing program of professional development activities to maintain licensure and improve interpreting practices in educational settings.Maintains awareness and stay informed of best practices, emerging trends and new legislation relating to Sign Language Interpreting in educational environments. Demonstrate and understand and respect the nuances of Deaf culture and communication styles. Exhibit strong communication, interpersonal skills, and ability to work independently on an assigned task.Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and collect data. Performs other duties as assigned. Essential Job Functions: Sit, stand, and work for required periods of time. Speak and hear. Use close vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception. Reach with hands and arms and use hands and fingers to lift and handle objects and operate tools, computers, and or control. Exposure to heated/air conditioned and ventilated facilities. Occasional exposure to a variety of weather conditions. Function in a workplace that is usually moderately quiet but can be noisy at times.Salary: According to the Limestone County Schools Salary Schedule.
