Signed first printing of this work that traces the career of the modernist architect George Howe, a hugely influential designer and early popularizer of the International style - by award-winning architect Robert A. M. Stern. George Howe's career spanned a time of great architectural change and upheaval, from the Arts and Crafts movement to the modernism of post-WWII. He occupied a central place in what would become the Philadelphia School of architects, and continued to propagate architectural knowledge as the chairman of Yale's Department of Architecture in the late 1940s and '50s. This volume was written by a young Robert A. M. Smith, who would go on to be Dean of the same department. Scarce signed. 10'' x 7.25''. Original blue cloth boards. Original unclipped (no price) blue, black, and white dust jacket. Illustrated in black and white. 474 pages, including index. Small owner name to front flyleaf. Signed by Stern to title page. Advertising mailer for a lecture by Stern at the National Building Museum loosely laid in. Jacket with mild edgewear, light sunning to spine. Binding with a touch of sunning to edges. Clean and sound overall. Near fine in very good plus dust jacket.
