Overview:
The Central Health CHW Apprenticeship Program is a unique "earn and learn" opportunity for individuals seeking to become Certified Community Health Workers (CHWs) in Travis County.

 

As a full-time Central Health employee, apprentices will receive an hourly pay, benefits, and hands-on training while completing the coursework required for CHW certification as required by the Texas Department of Health and Human Services.

 

CHWs play a critical role in bridging healthcare access gaps, supporting patients, and advocating for underserved communities. In this position, apprentices (or trainees) will learn to provide non-medical support services, working under the guidance of experienced CHWs and healthcare professionals.

 

This paid CHW apprenticeship includes approximately 520 hours of in-person instruction and externship experience,  ensuring apprentices (or trainees) gain the knowledge and skills needed to excel as CHWs. Specifically, this is a 13-week program and on-site attendance is mandatory between the hours of 8am-5pm.

 

The apprentice will provide direct and indirect patient care. Applicants are expected to travel between different sites during the training period.

 

Please note: Upon successful completion, apprentices will be eligible to apply for permanent employment within Central Health or a community-based facility based on exisiting job openings.

Responsibilities:
Essential Functions: 

Complete the state sponsored Community Health Worker apprenticeship program following the assigned training schedule.

Successfully complete course learning modules.

Successfully complete required externship hours.

Observe and follow Central Health’s health and safety procedures.

Adhere to patient confidentiality at all times and treat patients with courtesy and respect.

Collaborate and communicate respectfully and professionally with all members of the care team in providing patient-centered care and regarding processes and clinical issues.

Qualifications:
Minimum Education: 

High School Diploma or equivalent (higher degree accepted)
