**About This Exciting Fast Paced Role**The new VIS group is like a start-up company operating with that mindset within a multi-billion dollar company.
Varian is looking for an experienced and motivated Staff Mechanical Engineer that has extensive experience with medical electromechanical device design with additional experience in disposable design.
This is a great opportunity to work in R&D on therapeutic disposable devices to be used in ablation applications.
The projects themselves will be technically challenging, touching on multiple technical disciplines, requiring an individual that is open-minded, creative, diligent, collaborative, and can quickly integrate information from various workstreams.
The position will provide the engineer the opportunity to design & develop primarily in the area of mechanical engineering but will also challenge the engineer to engage in systems engineering, manufacturing engineering, test method development & execution, verification & validation documentation & execution, customer interaction, and cross-functional interaction & cooperation (Quality Engineering, Marketing, Clinical Affairs, Regulatory Affairs, etc.).
Work with technical team members in the development of ablation devices, ensuring all R&D deliverables are met through all phases of development.

* Develop test methods, fixtures, and write protocols/reports for engineering and V&V testing.
* Conduct technical design reviews with the project team(s) and subject matter experts.
* Generate and release design documentation per product QMS procedures.
* Present status updates to functional and portfolio management teams.
* Follow good practices to document and protect company intellectual property.
* Share best practices across the organization and coach / mentor other engineers and technicians.
* Demonstrated design and prototyping capabilities including FMEA, tolerance analysis, design for manufacturability (DFM), 3D printing/machining techniques and other methods.
**Minimum Required Skills and Knowledge:*** BS Engineering (Mechanical, Biomedical, Material Science)* 10+ years' experience leading development of disposables medical products from concept through launch* Successful track record of leading development of medical disposable products from early development through product launch* Experience with design and process development of medical disposables products incorporating small parts and mechanisms* Proficiency with Solidworks (Experience with FEA a plus)* Hands-on prototyping and troubleshooting experience* Ability to read and interpret engineering specifications, drawings, manufacturing instructions and technical analyses* Experience with developing physical test models and test methods related to mechanical performance* Knowledge of design of experiments, descriptive statistical data analysis techniques and statistical packages (e.g. Minitab)* Proficiency in developing test protocols and generating technical reports* Proficiency in authoring technical documents such as manufacturing instructions, mechanical drawings, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals* Experience with medical device design control process and DHF management* Proficient with MS Office products (i.e. Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Project)* Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing* Ability to work in a team environment and highly matrixed organization* Ability to organize and prioritize workflow in order to meet project timelines* Previous mentorship and/or team-leadership for junior technical colleagues* Self-motivated with ability to work independently and with minimal supervision* Experience working in an ISO ***** quality management system desired, not required**Preferred Qualifications:*** Experience with Cryoablation/Microwave/RF Antenna technology, development and manufacturing* Experience with designing small, high precision parts and mechanisms* Familiarity with electromechanical and embedded systems/electronicsWork with Project Management team to establish and track project metrics (e.g. schedule, budget, product cost, reliability, and yield).
Utilize and grow a depth of knowledge in disposable medical device manufacturing and related technologies, e.g. molding, extrusion, adhesive bonding, laser welding, ultrasonic bonding, soldering, wire forming, sterilization, grinding etc.
