Pipefitter Job Description The Pipefitter installs, assembles, and maintains piping systems by interpreting blueprints and technical specifications, selecting appropriate materials, and performing precise cutting, threading, bending, and fitting of pipe. This role works on a variety of new construction and industrial projects, ensuring that all piping systems meet quality, safety, and code requirements while operating tools and equipment such as forklifts, overhead cranes, and cutting torches.Responsibilities Review and interpret blueprints, drawings, technical manuals, and specifications to determine the scope of work, including pipe locations, quantities, and material requirements. Select the appropriate type and size of pipe, fittings, valves, hangers, supports, and related materials and equipment according to project specifications and applicable codes.Cut, thread, bend, and assemble pipe using hand and power tools to meet required measurements and configurations. Prepare, cut, fabricate, lay out, fit, position, and assemble piping components together in various positions to meet design and quality standards. Bolt, clamp, and tack-weld parts to secure piping components in position for final welding operations.Install hangers, supports, valves, and other components in accordance with piping system plans, isometric drawings, and specifications. Perform leak tests and other quality checks on piping systems to verify integrity and compliance with project and code requirements. Identify, select, and safely use tools and equipment required for each task, including grinders, drills, beveling machines, and other fabrication tools.Operate forklifts and overhead cranes to move pipe, components, and materials safely around the worksite. Hoist and position loads using slings, chains, shackles, hooks, cables, and other rigging equipment in a safe and controlled manner. Use Oxy/fuel and plasma hand cutting torches, as well as plasma cutting equipment, to cut and prepare pipe and materials according to specifications.Follow all site safety procedures and best practices while working at new construction and industrial locations, including when traveling to remote or out-of-town projects. Collaborate with other trades and team members to coordinate work, resolve issues, and maintain project schedules. Essential SkillsProven pipe fitting experience in industrial or construction environments. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, construction drawings, and technical manuals to determine work procedures. Ability to read and understand weld symbols, weld procedures, and mechanical and structural drawings. Strong skills in cutting, threading, bending, and assembling pipe to precise measurements.Proficiency in using Oxy/fuel and plasma hand cutting torches and plasma cutting equipment. Ability to properly identify and safely use tools such as grinders, drills, beveling machines, and related fabrication equipment. Capability to operate forklifts and overhead cranes safely and efficiently.Experience hoisting loads using slings, chains, shackles, hooks, cables, and other rigging equipment. Attention to detail and ability to perform leak tests and quality checks on piping systems. Ability to work from piping system plans and specifications and follow instructions accurately. Additional Skills&Qualifications Pipe fitting experience in accordance with ASME B31.3 and B31.4 and API 1104 codes. Welding and/or tacking experience using the GTAW (TIG) welding process. Familiarity with weld inspections and inspection documentation requirements. NCCER Certification as an Industrial Pipe Fitter.Formal or technical education related to pipefitting, welding, or industrial construction.
