General Description

SUNY Niagara has a need for part-time instructors to teach introductory courses at the Niagara County Holding Center.

The classes are in-person (face-to-face) at the Niagara County Holding Center in Lockport, NY. The courses are daily from 9:00 am– 10:30 am or 12:30 pm – 2:00 pm for MOD15, MOD25, and MOD35 (five-week courses). Priority will be given to instructors who are able to teach English and/or Math, however all disciplines may apply. Instructors will need to pass a background check and complete mandatory civilian training.

Selectect candidates must be able to pass a background check and complete civilian training at the Niagara County Jail.

In order to build and maintain an active pool of qualified candidates to meet our present and future needs for this position, SUNY Niagara will accept applications on a continuous basis. Openings may or may not exist at this time. Applications are evaluated on an as-needed basis, and candidates will be contacted when the department has an opening. Candidates who submit their information may or may not be notified as to the status of their application.

Typical Work Activities

Teach course on campus.

Track attendance as needed

Complete census reports

Report on student learning outcomes at the end of the semester

Report grades at the conclusion of the semester

Essential Functions

Ability to work with, and teach a diverse student population. Ability to speak in front of groups of people. Must be able to effectively communicate with students, co-workers, supervisors and the campus community. Must be able to develop, prepare and present information. Must able to operate computers. Must be able to physically perform the duties of the position and must adjust any teaching to the Americans with Disabilities Act provisions.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in the teaching discipline or a closely related field from an accredited institution.

Prior teaching, training, or instructional experience in higher education, adult education, workforce development, or a related setting.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse student populations, including non-traditional and underserved students.

Willingness and ability to comply with all correctional facility rules, regulations, security procedures, and background clearance requirements.

Proficiency with instructional technology and/or learning management systems appropriate to the assigned discipline.

Desirable Qualifications

Master’s degree in the teaching discipline or a closely related field from an accredited institution.

Community college teaching experience.

Experience teaching incarcerated, justice-impacted, adult, or other non-traditional student populations.

Experience with prison education programs, re-entry programming, workforce development, or adult literacy initiatives.

Knowledge of SUNY , community college, or correctional education policies and procedures.

Bilingual or multilingual communication skills.
