SUMMARY:

A Department Chair at Seymour Community Schools serves as an instructional leader who supports teachers, strengthens curriculum, and promotes student achievement. This role collaborates with building administrators and staff to ensure alignment with district goals, provides guidance on best practices, and helps foster a positive, student-centered learning environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Provide instructional leadership to support high-quality teaching where all students thrive through explicit, engaging, and standards-aligned instruction. Collaborate with teachers to share and implement research-based best practices in content-area instruction. Work with teachers and administrators to analyze assessment data, identify student needs, and guide instructional decision-making.Lead department teams in the effective use of formal and informal assessments to improve student learning outcomes. Support teachers in evaluating student work and monitoring progress to ensure continuous growth. Partner with building administration to identify departmental strengths and areas for improvement aligned to school and district goals.Assist teachers in interpreting local and state assessment data and applying results to instructional planning. Promote alignment of curriculum, instruction, and assessment with district standards and expectations. Support the selection and effective use of instructional materials and resources that engage students and enhance learning.Identify professional learning needs within the department and help coordinate relevant training, workshops, or collaborative learning opportunities. Model effective instructional strategies and encourage peer collaboration and shared leadership within the department. Communicate regularly with administration and staff to ensure clarity, consistency, and progress toward instructional goals.Maintain accurate records, reports, and required documentation in a timely manner. Attend and actively participate in required meetings, professional development, and school events. Uphold school policies, administrative guidelines, and Board expectations. Lead departmental initiatives and support continuous improvement efforts across the school.Continue professional growth through ongoing learning and leadership development. Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor's degree in Education

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Valid Indiana teaching certificate

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, correspondences, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to apply general mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, parents and community, and ability to speak clearly and concisely in written or oral communication.
