Horton Pedestrian Access Solutions leads the industry in providing commercial and industrial markets with a variety of innovative, high performingm, automatic entrance systems. Based in Corpus Christi, Texas, Horton builds about 35,000 automatic doors, revolving doors, security entrances and windows annually. Its customers include restaurants, hospitals, nursing homes, airports, hotels, casinos, office buildings, convenience stores, retail food stores and government buildings.
The Position
- Designs complex electro-mechanical automated door systems to industry and regulatory standards.
- Performs a variety of engineering work in planning, design and improvement of products.
- Defines, documents, analyzes, performs, and interprets developmental tests for new and/or modified products or product components.
- Investigates and resolves product issues in conjunction with other engineering and technical personnel.
- Provides technical support and advice to distributors, architects, the production floor, and other engineering groups as needed.
- Acts as liaison with outside suppliers in establishing or modifying specifications for purchased items.
- Devises and applies testing procedures for parts or sub-assemblies received from outside vendors.
- Participates in the design reviews, stage gate process reviews and design for manufacture reviews.
- Works with Product Managers to initiate the first article production and participates in the first article inspection process.
- Research new and existing technologies for applications to our products to enhance operational performance and reliability.
- Manage new product design projects and develop ways to implement changes in our products.
- Construct prototypes of new products and ensure that their designed usage meet the product specifications.
- Manage product testing for special applications and manage any outside vendors that may participate in the testing.
- Perform life cycle testing on proposed cost reducing material to ensure that they meet the product specifications indicated and meet expectations.
- Compile technical data and information for Distributors to use for project submittals.
- Manage, support and correct production issues when they fall within the engineering area whenever the problems arise on the production floor.
- Acts as liaison with outside suppliers in establishing or modifying specifications for purchased items.
- Create project scope, budget, timeline, etc. for each project that is assigned.
- Liaison with codes and standards groups (e.g. UL) to obtain product approvals and certifications.
- Clarify code and technical requirements for Distributors.
- Redesign products for special applications or special functions.
- Answer technical questions and troubleshoot problems in the field for the Distributors.
- Answer architect questions concerning our products performance and capabilities.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications
- Requires 3+ years of work experience in mechanical engineering, preferably with a focus on electro-mechanical systems.
- Strong decision-making requiring detail analysis and investigation with solutions requiring original thinking.
- Ability to see the big picture and technical knowledge along with the ability to project manage, multi-task and work well within a team.
- Ability to design components and their systems for efficient high-volume manufacturing
- Ability to use CAD software to fully conceptualize and detail designs for verifications, drawings, and documentation,
- Operate as a member of cross-functional teams involved at every stage of design and development in collaboration with colleagues in other engineering functions as well as production, research, marketing, and after-sales service.
Education
- Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related studies. Master?s in Engineering related field a plus.
Physical / Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to use personal computer, ten key calculators, copy machine, fax, telephone, presentation systems and printers.
- MS Office.
- Power tools, drill presses, band saw, hand tools, calipers, torque wrench.
- Ability to work long hours.
- Highly focused, ability to read and write.
- Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing.
Travel
- Travel as required; less than 15%.
