Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The mission of the Department of Mass Communication is to prepare students for careers and study in mass communication. The department offers engaged learning, student media and research experiences and connections to professional practice opportunities. The department values the comprehensive preparation of graduates with an understanding of the ethical, practical, and theoretical foundations in the field and an understanding of and appreciation for cultural diversity.
Primary Purpose of Position
The adjunct instructor will be responsible for teaching in-person and/or online courses in the department, as needed. The responsibilities of instructors include teaching, evaluation, and other instruction-related duties and responsibilities that help the department achieve its mission and meet the goals of the University, including the following:
Setting up assignments
Setting up grading policies and procedures
Creating the course syllabus
Learning the University’s Canvas course management system
Reporting midterm and final grades by specified deadlines
Communicating problems in your courses to the department chair
Receiving annual peer-teaching reviews
Contributing to department assessment efforts
Having students complete Student Ratings of Instruction (SRI) surveys each semester
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design in mass communication or related fields as appropriate to the assigned course(s).
Knowledge of appropriate strategies for teaching and instruction for individuals and groups.
Knowledge of appropriate strategies for the measurement of instructional outcomes.
Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods, including alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media.
An understanding of appropriate learning strategies as well as problem-solving and organizational skills.
Willingness to engage in teaching-related professional development activities.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to maintain office hours as required.
Minimum Education/Experience
Master’s degree in communication or mass communication or an extensive record of professional achievement and significant professional experience in the areas of journalism, mass communication, speech communication and/or digital and new media as appropriate to the assigned course(s).
