Requirements

EDUCATION/TRAINING

High school diploma or equivalent, plus some additional law enforcement and computer training recommended. Must have an active Deputy Sheriff Act 2 certificate and complete required training every two years.

WORK EXPERIENCE

A minimum of six (6) to twelve (12) months working experience as a Deputy Sheriff; prior experience in law enforcement or a legal/judicial environment preferred.

CORPORAL-SECURITY-SHERFF 11/12/2020

Position Description Non-Exempt OVERALL OBJECTIVE OF JOB

To carry out duties and responsibilities of the Franklin County Sheriff's Office by performing the enforcement and protective duties of the Courts, acting under the direct orders of the Sheriff or Chief Deputy Sheriff. The position of Corporal Deputy Sheriff is a law enforcement position requiring advanced education and/or experience and training. A Deputy Sheriff is a sworn law enforcement officer charged to uphold the laws of the County of Franklin, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the United States of America.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB

1. Executes all duties of a Deputy Sheriff within the Judicial Division.

2. Directs assigned staff (Deputy Sheriff's and Security Guards); processes employee concerns and problems, directs work assignments, and provides direction and assistance to staff when needed.

3. When required or directed, prepares work schedules and task assignments for staff; modifies schedules to ensure adequate coverage at security screening points; monitors daily activities and performance of duties.

4. Assists with the development of schedules for security staff.

5. Acts as the first link in the chain of command with the Security staff.

6. Provides immediate response to personnel need changes in County security.

7. Provides assistance and backup support to Security Guards; Deputies and other Law Enforcement personnel / agencies as necessary; monitors activities of Security Guards and all safety factors to ensure the safety of subordinates

8. Maintains the Office security watch list.

9. Aids in the instruction of new personnel on proper protocol and procedures of the Sheriff's Office.

10. Resolves questions and problems of visitors to County facilities.

11. Performs various administrative tasks, which may include typing, photocopying, faxing, shredding and / or filing of documents, computer data entry and maintenance / inventorying of office equipment and supplies.

12. Responsible for maintaining a higher than average knowledge in the rules governing the duties of the Sheriff in civil, criminal, and security Procedures.

OTHER DUTIES OF JOB

1. Attends training, meetings, and seminars as required.

2. Performs other job-related duties as required.

3. Assists with maintaining law and order during strikes, riots or disasters.

4. Sits on committees or task forces for policy or procedural development within the County as necessary.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Receives occasional instruction and supervision from the Judicial Sergeant, Lieutenant, Sheriff or

Chief Deputy Sheriff in regard to daily work duties.

SUPERVISION GIVEN

Serves as direct supervisor within their division for all security guards and may serve as

Officer-in-Charge during the absence of the Judicial Sergeant.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Works indoors in crowed workspace with adequate lighting and ventilation, but with fluctuations in temperatures.

2. Works with average exposure to stress, but subject to frequent disruptions and noise.

3. Below normal indoor exposure to dust/dirt; works outdoors or on road frequently and is subject to outdoor elements and environmental conditions.

4. Subject to frequent travel during all seasons.

5. Works in conditions of potential outbursts of disruptive behavior.

6. Periodically works beyond normal work hours to ensure proper opening and closing of court.

PHYISICAL/MENTAL CONDITIONS

1. Must possess ability to record, convey and present information, explain procedures and follow instructions.

2. Must be able to stand, walk, drive frequently during the workday, with occasional sitting, twisting, bending, kneeling, stooping, and reaching as necessary in order to carry out essential job duties.

3. Light work, with occasional lifting/carrying of objects.

4. Requires very coordinated dexterity of fingers/hands, arms/legs/torso as necessary to carry out job duties.

5. Must demonstrate emotional stability.

6. Must be able to physically and mentally react quickly in the event of a disturbance or physical outbreak.

7. Must be able to move frequently throughout the workday.

8. Must be able to work with clients who carry or may carry the active hepatitis or other infectious diseases.

QUALIFICATIONS

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

1. Must be able to speak and understand the English language in an understandable manner and in order to carry out essential job duties.

2. Must possess good communication and interpersonal skills.

3. Must possess ability to function independently, have flexibility and the ability to work effectively with general public, prisoners, staff and others.

4. Must possess ability to maintain confidentiality in regard to client information and records.

5. Must possess the technical knowledge of operating personal computers and other office equipment with accuracy and reasonable speed.

6. Must possess a valid Pennsylvania's driver's license and a willingness to travel as needed, and to transport prisoners as needed.

7. Must possess ability to overcome and safely control aggressive individuals.

8. Must possess general knowledge of law enforcement principals, practices, methods and procedures and ability to apply them to the duties of the job.

9. Must possess ability to coordinate a variety of duties and efforts and work well with other departments.

10. Must possess initiative, discretion and be able to make decisions when circumstances warrant.

11. Must possess ability to use firearms and make appropriate arrests when necessary.

12. Must qualify annually in firearms proficiency in accordance with County firearm policy/procedures.

13. Must possess ability to travel distances that may require an overnight stay.

14. Must submit to random drug and/or health screenings as seen necessary.

15. Must possess initiative and problem solving skills.

16. Must possess ability to supervise work and staff; handle personnel issues as required and effectively enforce established policies and procedures.

17. Must possess through knowledge of organization, procedures, policies and operation of the County Sheriff's Office.

18. Must possess knowledge of the procedures required in the service of civil and criminal legal documents and execution of court orders.
