POSITION SUMMARY
:
The Advanced Practice Professional(APP) has coordination and clinical skills required for thecomprehensive management of neurosurgery patients, (includingbiological, social, and psychological assessments). The primaryresponsibility of this position is operative first assist andinpatient management duties as operative schedules allow, withcomprehensive management in the outpatient/ambulatory setting (asapplicable). The APP coordinates involvement of medical specialtyteams necessary to develop a comprehensive plan for the patient andreviews the plan of care with the other members of the clinicalteam, participates in directing that care, performsdiagnostic/therapeutic procedures and coordinates dispositionplanning (as applicable) and outpatient follow up care (asapplicable). The APP participates in the education of residents andmedical/nursing students.
Provide healthcare services consistent with state law and therequirements of the professional licensing or certificationauthority and/or hospital privileges, where applicable. Suchservice may include but are not limited to:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR NURSE PRACTITIONER
:
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
1.Graduate of a CCNE accredited nursing program with Master’sDegree in Nursing.
2.National Certification by one of the recognized APRNCertification Centers.
3.Licensure or eligibility for licensure, as a professionalRegistered Nurse and Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in WestVirginia.
4.APRNs requesting to be privileged as OR First Assist will berequired to complete RNFA education/certification.
5.American Heart Association BLS Certification required withadditional Advanced Life Support training at the discretion ofthe
department.
EXPERIENCE:

1.Manages comprehensive and individualized care for neurosurgerypatients and their families in the procedural and inpatient phaseof hospitalization and in the ambulatory setting (asapplicable).
2.Completes pre-procedural/surgical evaluations. Serve in theperioperative arena including but not limited to OR First Assist inthe operating suite.
3.Completes integrated assessments for perioperative patients andassists with inpatient management as OR schedules allow.
4.With the collaboration of neurosurgery faculty or by followingestablished clinical Guidelines and Protocols, orders additionaltests or consults as deemed appropriate.
5.Performs and communicates results of diagnostic tests followingestablished clinical guidelines and scope of practice.
6.Consults and communicates with clinic and hospital staffregarding abnormal findings in the evaluations of patients.
7.Performs succinct comprehensive clinical evaluations anddocuments findings in medical record.
8.Facilitates patients’ presurgical, intraoperative andpostoperative needs by coordinating appropriate services and testsnecessary for care.
9.Develops a comprehensive individualized plan of care forneurosurgery patients, which includes teaching, dispositionplanning follow-up and necessary referral to other members of thehealth care team, as necessary.
10.Demonstrates expertise in caring for patients across the agecontinuum of their educational experience and certification.
11.Identifies unstable or complex neurosurgery patient caresituations and facilitates appropriate intervention in the clinicand/or hospital setting.
12.Recognizes emergency situations and initiates effectiveemergency care.
13.Assists in the collection of outcome measures (asapplicable).
14.Demonstrates critical thinking and diagnostic reasoning skillsin clinical decision making by the identification, evaluation, andmanagement of the individual needs of patients/families.
15.Demonstrates the ability to utilize equipment in a safemanner.
16.Bases decisions made/actions taken on the relevant scientificprinciples, established standards of care and/or researchfindings.
17.Utilizes teaching/learning theory and appropriate teachingstrategies in the provision of education to nursing staff, hospitalstaff, students, patients, families, and the community.
