Description

Fire Fighter Recruit
Under supervision, perform fire suppression, rescue and property conservation activities on an assigned shift in accordance with standard operating procedures.
Perform as first responder to provide basic life support and emergency care to sudden illness or accident victims.
Participate in or conduct fire prevention activities including inspection and public education.
Perform routine maintenance of equipment and apparatus and care of buildings and grounds.
Wear protective clothing and breathing devices and operate a variety of fire-fighting equipment such as hoses, extinguishers, ladders and axes.
Firefighters may be assigned to work on special assignments that require abilities acquired through experience and special training.
Salary: This position is part of a Career Development program.

Fire Fighter I - $******* hourly / $62,****** annually
Fire Fighter II - $******* hourly / $65,****** annually
Fire Fighter III - $******* hourly / $69,****** annually

Examples of Duties
Essential Job Functions:
Participate in fire suppression and low to high angle rescue activities; operate pumps, aerial ladders and other auxiliary fire apparatus.
Participate in engine and pumper hook-up at scene of fire; lay connector hose; hold nozzle and direct water stream to combat fire; raise and climb ladders; use chemical extinguishers, bars, hooks, ropes and other equipment to suppress and extinguish fires.
Perform salvage and overhaul operations, sweeping water, removing debris, and searching for and extinguishing hidden fires.
Respond to medical emergencies by providing basic life support within authorized and prescribed limits of possessed certifications.
Assist Paramedics in performing more advanced life support activities.
Perform fire prevention inspections of buildings and contents to ensure compliance with appropriate fire codes.
Provide fire prevention information to property owners and the general public, one-on-one and before groups.
Participate in required drills, classes, continuing education events and activities as provided by the Department or as directed; provide training to others as required.
Perform regular routine safety checks and maintenance of fire fighting tools, equipment and apparatus, and perform general maintenance work in the up-keep of fire department building and grounds.
Other Job Functions:
Perform related tasks as required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience: High School graduate and with or without experience.
Must be able to complete a fire academy and EMT-B within one year of their hire date
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: (Preferred)
Knowledge of fire suppression and rescue principles, practices, techniques, apparatus and equipment.
Knowledge of fire-fighting principles and fire prevention techniques.
Knowledge of emergency medial care techniques and methods and skill in their application.
Knowledge of salvage and overhaul operations.
Skill in operating fire/rescue apparatus and equipment.
Ability to analyze conditions and respond quickly according standard operating procedures.
Ability to work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
Physical ability to perform essential job duties.
Requirements
Special Requirements: Must be at least 18 years of age.
Must be a citizen of the United States.
Possession of a valid Class D driver's license.
Must meet and maintain qualifications and training standards as established by the department and the State of Tennessee.

Working Conditions: Much of employee's time is spent at fire stations that have features common to a residential facility.
When an alarm sounds, response must be rapid regardless of weather or hour.
Work activities involve risk of death or injury from sudden cave-ins of floors, toppling walls, traffic accidents when responding to calls, and exposure to flames and smoke.
Employees may come in contact with poisonous, flammable, or explosive gases and chemicals and contagious diseases.
Employees must wear protective gear that can be very heavy and hot.
Physical demands include carrying ****** lbs.
of equipment; climbing many flights of stairs, ascending and descending on ground extensions ladders and fire escapes; and working at heights and in confined spaces to fight fires and rescue victims.
The general work schedule requires 24-hour shifts, assigned on an alternating basis with either two or four days off between assignments.
While on duty, employees live and sleep at the fire station.
