Position Summary:
We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Research Manager to join the firm’s expanding Knowledge & Innovation department. The Research Manager leads and manages the Research and Knowledge Analysts, overseeing legal and business research. Provides strategic direction, mentorship, and support for team members. Conducts research to stay current with industry trends and best practices.
Essential Functions:
Team Management:
Oversees Research and Knowledge Analysts by guiding them in setting individual goals and regularly providing feedback on their performance. Also prepares annual performance evaluations.
Supervises research processes to ensure the quality and consistency of the work produced.
Manages the research request ticket queue, ensuring timely responses and appropriate prioritization of attorney needs.
Communicates firm policies and expectations to Research and Knowledge Analysts.
Organizes meetings to facilitate research training for Research and Knowledge Analysts.
Conducts formal research training sessions for attorneys and staff.
Monitors Research and Knowledge Analysts activities and delivers regular reports to the Senior Manager.
Exemplifies the qualities and performance expected of firm employees, including punctuality, professionalism, high-quality work, and a customer-focused attitude.
Stays current with developments in legal research methodologies and technologies.
Fosters a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement and innovation within the research team.
Research:
Provides research services for the firm’s attorneys and staff, including quick reference and detailed research on legal issues, litigation, and business information.
Proficient in research using Lexis, Westlaw, Bloomberg and other electronic resources.
Uses resources in accordance with firm policies.
Evaluates research results and creates comprehensive research products, including executive summaries and reports.
Assists users in selecting and utilizing electronic research tools, offering training on efficient research techniques.
Monitors online databases and other resources for practice-specific information.
Records billable and non-billable research accurately in the firm’s time entry system, conforming to firm policy.
Engages in professional development through internal and external training and participation in professional associations.
Requirements:
MLS or equivalent. 7+ years law firm library or equivalent experience.
Proficient in all Microsoft applications, including but not limited to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams and SharePoint.
Expert user of legal research platforms including Westlaw, Lexis, Bloomberg, Vital Law, S&P Capital IQ, HeinOnline, Hoovers, Lex Machina, Accurint, and TLO.
Experience with Quest and Research Monitor preferred. Familiarity with legal technology and AI-assisted research tools.
Benefits:
In accordance with Illinois Equal Pay Act Transparency Notice, the expected salary range for this Illinois position is between $76,800 and $115,200. Actual pay will be adjusted based on experience, geographic location, and other job-related factors as permitted by law. This position qualifies for the benefits below.
