Job Title
City Jail Officer
Summary
A successful candidate will play an active role in the City of College Park's existing operational success.
The purpose of the position is to ensure the safety and security of prisoners and visitors to the City Jail.
Successful implementation of the work results in a safer atmosphere, a decrease in inmate conflict, and an increase in visitor security.
Essential Functions
Independent judgment is required to identify, select and apply the most appropriate of available guidelines and procedures as well as interpret precedents.
This position is responsible for the safety and security of prisoners and visitors to the City jail.
Work includes booking, supervising, and controlling detainees; enforcement of security rules, regulations, and procedures; and, the provision of services and information to detainees.
Receives and books detainees including fingerprinting, photographing, and issuing uniforms.
Collects, inventories, and logs inmate property at booking.
Maintains routine operations and security of the jail including checks jail to verify that all prisoners are accounted for; monitors location and activity of prisoners.
Completes and maintains all arrest and booking reports on all prisoners and persons placed on bond.
Places prisoners in an assigned jail cell and removes them for release or transportation.
Arranges for an escort to transport to other locations.
Assures safety and health of prisoners.
Monitors prisoner activity in jail cells.
Assures prisoners receive meals.
Dispense necessary medications as prescribed by a physician.
Arranges for a prisoner to be transported for medical care as needed.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that logically relate to the position.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws on inmate sentencing, pretrial conditions, and release.
Knowledge of the policies and procedures established by the College Park Police Department.
Knowledge of Georgia records retention laws.
Knowledge of policies and procedures covering inmate security, classification, care, and discipline.
Ability to exercise sound judgment in routine and emergencies.
Ability to receive and maintain CPR certification, Advanced First Aid certification, and any other training as required.
Ability to work in a hazardous and confining working environment.
Ability to deal tactfully and firmly with inmates and the public.
Ability to prepare and maintain records.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written orders.
Ability to obtain POST certification (Peace Officer Standard Training) as a "Basic Jail Officer".
Must be able to use tact and courtesy in dealing with the public.
Must be able to analyze and evaluate procedures and work processes and to exercise appropriate judgment in establishing priorities and work methods.
Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships and to deal effectively and courteously with others, to work independently and in team settings.
Must be able to type or to use a personal computer with word processing and related software and to enter and retrieve information with reasonable speed and accuracy.
Moderate physical activity.
Requires handling objects of average-weight up to fifty (50) pounds, standing, sitting, and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent.
Associate's degree or related college coursework preferred; law enforcement-related training or experience preferred.
Must have a valid State of Georgia driver's license.
Must be certified as a Jailer or become certified within one (1) year of employment.
An equivalent combination of education and experience is accepted.
Strong organizational and communication skills.
Experience in communicating with diverse communities, and in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships.
Proficiency in MS Office Suite, as well as knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures.
Extensive hours and weekends will be required at times.
Pre-Employment screening is required: criminal background check and drug testing.
