Position Overview:
A growing engineering service organization is seeking a Survey Field Technician to support a variety of land surveying and infrastructure-related projects. This role is responsible for collecting accurate field data, operating modern surveying technology, and assisting with construction layout and mapping activities. The ideal candidate enjoys collaborating with technical teams, and contributing to projects across multiple industries.
Key Responsibilities
Conduct field surveys including boundary, topographic, utility, and construction layout assignments while ensuring accuracy and adherence to project requirements. Operate and maintain survey equipment such as GPS systems, robotic total stations, levels, drones, and electronic data collectors. Gather and verify field measurements, coordinates, elevations, and other site information for engineering and construction projects.Document field activities through detailed notes, sketches, photos, and digital records for office processing and quality review. Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and survey personnel to interpret plans, specifications, and site requirements. Assist with staking and layout operations by identifying and marking critical construction points in the field.Ensure surveying instruments and tools remain properly calibrated, maintained, and ready for daily use. Follow company and client safety standards, including PPE requirements and hazard awareness protocols on active project sites. Communicate project updates, site observations, and potential issues with internal teams and contractors in a timely manner.Support office operations through data transfer, basic drafting assistance, and preparation for upcoming field assignments. Required Qualifications
Associate degree in Engineering Technology, Land Surveying, Geomatics, or a related technical field preferred; bachelor's degree considered a plus. Approximately 2-4 years of field surveying experience within civil engineering, telecommunications, utility, or construction environments. Familiarity with telecom-related survey work such as towers, rooftops, fiber, or small-cell infrastructure is beneficial.Desired Skills&Experience
Strong working knowledge of GPS equipment, total stations, UAV/drone technology, and modern surveying software. Understanding of land surveying practices including boundary analysis and topographic mapping. Ability to interpret engineering drawings, construction documents, maps, and site plans. Strong organizational and multitasking abilities in deadline-driven environments.Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams. Self-motivated with the ability to work independently in field conditions. Problem-solving mindset with the ability to evaluate field conditions and adapt to changing project demands. Work Environment&Travel
Frequent travel to project locations throughout the Midwest region is expected, including occasional overnight travel. Position requires outdoor work in varying weather and terrain conditions year-round. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, navigate uneven terrain, perform manual digging, and install survey markers or stakes.Flexibility to work extended hours when necessary to support project schedules and deadlines.
