The State of New Hampshire, Department of Justice, Environmental Protection Bureau has a full-time vacancy for a Legal Assistant.
Summary:
To coordinate and manage the initiation and preparation of court cases and other legal matters in the Environment Protection Bureau by supervising support staff while aiding the bureau chief in carrying out administrative functions.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
DETAILED TASKS (AGENCY/POSITION-SPECIFIC):
Answer Phones and screen calls for all attorneys. Assist citizens with their complaints, either by routing them to the proper state agency or other bureaus or taking notes and passing on to the Bureau Chief.
Performs the maintenance of bureau pleadings, files, mail, contracts, and legal opinions both in hard copy and in ProLaw and proofread attorney pleadings and letters to ensure efficient operation of the bureau.
Log e-filing and hard mail daily; calendar all court and discovery dates for all attorneys and schedule meetings for attorneys and send summons/petition to appropriate sheriff for service on defendants or help prepare out-of-state service package.
Supervises all Legal Secretary positions and secretarial duties for Bureau Chief and Assistant Attorneys General to ensure timely, accurate and professional completion of bureau and administrative work.
Notifies attorneys and, if necessary, paralegal of upcoming hearings.
Updates RSA volumes to keep the bureau up-to-date regarding legislative developments.
Researches legal requirements and oversees filing with state and federal courts and service by sheriffs' departments of all pleadings generated by bureau attorneys to assure proper and timely submission of documents.
Reviews all bureau mail and calendars all court and discovery dates in ProLaw for all attorneys to ensure timely appearances and responses by attorneys.
Produces bureau case management and timekeeping reports and compiles statistical information to aid bureau chief in providing necessary administrative reports.
Determines when files are to be archived, sends and maintains document list for the best utilization of office file space.
Keep track of revenue received by the State for work performed by the Bureau. Submit summary of revenue to front office each week for inclusion in the Governor's Report.
YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS:
Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience:
Associate's degree and 2 years of experience OR equivalent combination of 4 years of education and experience after completion of high school. Education and experience must be in the legal field of civil litigation, paralegal work, or investigations.
License/Certification : Valid driver's license or access to transportation for travel throughout the state.

Experience as a legal assistant in a law office or experience with legal terminology.
