JOB TITLE: Building Inspector I or II or III

DEPARTMENT: Building Inspection

EFFECTIVE DATE: April 2026

FLSA CLASS: Non-Exempt

GRADE: 26 or 31 or 34

GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs building inspections for Box Elder County and those communities which are under contract, including all phases such as structural, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, as provided by law.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the general supervision of the Chief Building Official/Facility Manager.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Perform duties as deputy to building official as directed Review all building plans to determine their compliance to the codes. Issues building permits, collects fees, issues receipts, etc Perform all building inspections as per State and County Building Codes. Meets with owners, contractors, etc. and is able to explain building code requirements, violations, etc. Verifies that the construction is being performed as per standards set in building codes. Ensures that the citizens are being protected and are obtaining a safe structure as per the codesEnforces all county and applicable city zoning, mobile home and subdivision ordinances in areas of concern Keep a record of all inspections performed. Assist the Board of Appeals on all appeal cases and attends Board of Appeal meetings that apply to involved cases Continually updates and is current on building code requirementsMust be able to perform miscellaneous maintenance on county buildings as requested. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Building Inspector I

1. Education and experience

A. High School Education - College graduation not required but helpful.

AND

B. Two years of experience in the building industry and one year working as building inspector and one or more ICC certifications in electrical, building, mechanical, plumbing, plan checking, etc.

OR

C. Any equivalent combination of education and experience in the building trades.

2. Necessary Knowledge, Skills&Abilities

ICC Residential Certification.

Must be a State licensed inspector in at least one area (Electrical, Mechanical, Structural, Plumbing, Plan Checker). Must be licensed with the Department of Commerce in Utah as a building inspector.

Must be able to work well with the public and able to handle volatile situations with diplomacy and patience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must be able to access tight areas, be able to climb ladders and scaffolds during inspections.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk and talk and/or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; use hands to finger, handle or operate objects, controls, or tools; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; run and taste or smell.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must possess a valid and current driver's license. Must pass a pre-employment drug test. Must be licensed with Utah State Department of Commerce Division: Occupational&Professional Licensing as building inspector. SELECTION GUIDELINES

1. Education and experience

A. High School Education

AND

B. Four years of experience in the building industry and at least one year working as building inspector and four ICC/State certifications (structural, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, plan checker), plus at least one additional certification.

OR

C. Any equivalent combination of education and experience in the building trades.

Building Inspector III

1. Education and experience

A. High School Education

AND

B. Six to seven (6-7) years of experience in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess eight (structural, electrical, plumbing&mechanical ICC/state certifications, plus at least one additional as building inspector.)

OR

C. Any equivalent combination of education and experience in the building trades.

2. Necessary Knowledge, Skills&Abilities

ICC Residential 4 Way Certification.

Must be licensed with the Department of Commerce in Utah as a building inspector.

Must be able to work well with the public and able to handle volatile situations with diplomacy and patience.
