Lifeguard/Water Safety Instructor (WSI)

The city of Las Vegas Parks, Recreation&Cultural Affairs department invites applications for Lifeguard/Water Safety Instructor (WSI). This is an hourly level, part-time position. Scheduled hours for this position are limited to 19 hours or less per week (shift will vary based on the needs of the programs and facility). Hourly employees are also limited to 1,560 hours of work in any 18 month period. Supervision received is general supervision from higher level supervisory or management staff. Pool locations include Municipal Pool, Pavilion Pool, Doolittle Pool, Garside Pool, Carlos L. Martinez&Darrio J. Hall Pool, and Baker Pool. Interview process includes a 10-minute swim test and a hiring interview. Physical testing details include a swim/tread event and a skill drill. Each candidate receives only one attempt at each physical test. The purpose of this recruitment is to establish an eligible list for current/future openings.Example of duties include working in water 4-6 hours a day, teaching swimming courses and possible competitive swimming, safeguarding the pool and patrons, setting up and/or taking down equipment for program and/or special events, and maintaining order and cleanliness in the pool and adjoining areas.Minimum requirements include being at least 16 years of age, having formal and informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance, expected to attend and complete all in and out of water mandatory trainings, possessing American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification and Water Safety Instructor Certification, and having reliable transportation.Knowledge, skills and abilities include professionalism, effective communication, customer focus, adaptability, problem solving, productive partnerships, and technical and safety expertise.
