Description
We are seeking a skilled and experienced Power Plant Operating Engineer to join our facilities team. The ideal candidate will hold at minimum a Power Plant Operating Engineer's 2nd Class License and have hands-on experience in the operation and maintenance of stationary engines, mechanical systems, compressors, generators, and steam boilers. This position plays a vital role in supporting the facility's utility systems including light, heat, power, air conditioning, and refrigeration with a strong focus on steam boiler operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Operate and maintain stationary engines and mechanical systems
Diagnose, operate, and maintain air compressors and associated equipment
Work collaboratively with water treatment service providers to maintain optimal make-up water composition
Generate monthly inspections of underground fuel oil storage tanks
Maintain accurate and up-to-date logs for boiler house operations, maintenance activities, and fuel oil levels
Understand HVAC systems and how boiler systems integrate with heating and cooling functions
Monitor and maintain condensate return systems to enhance water recycling efficiency
Analyze and monitor the quality of steam make-up water
Coordinate annual and semi-annual pressure vessel inspections with certified inspectors
Document water treatment and conditioning activities thoroughly; interpret and record operational readings and system metrics
Conduct plumbing repairs as needed related to boiler system operations
Identify, diagnose, and address equipment and system malfunctions
Learn and understand site-specific boiler equipment as directed by on-site personnel
Follow written and verbal instructions effectively; communicate clearly in both formats
Demonstrate full operational competency in key equipment within 90 days of hire
Qualifications and Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent
Valid State of Illinois Boiler/Power Plant Operating Engineer License (1st or 2nd Class)
Ability to pass an extensive background check
Valid State Driver's License
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
Excellent documentation and communication abilities
Willingness to learn and adapt to specific facility equipment and protocols
