Main Activities/Duties/Responsibilities The successful candidate for the silica rubber testing technician role will quickly develop a complete understanding of the procedures used to complete an array of analytical techniques to characterize rubber materials for tear strength, abrasion, mechanical and rheological properties and use this understanding to ensure the Rubber Lab instruments are maintained and testing is completed with emphasis in quality. The Rubber testing technician will lead work in the rubber testing lab, supporting the R&D group. Thus, the key objectives of the technician will include:
Primary Objectives 1. Review and develop complete understanding of PPG rubber testing operation. This involves reviewing and understanding the standard operating procedures that detail the typical rubber testing request, proactively reaching out to the researchers, engineers and technicians in the Silicas R&D team to learn how to operate the different equipment in the rubber testing lab. 2. Prepare and Complete rubber testing as required by the R&D team. Maintaining an accurate log of all experiments. 3. Equipment maintenance. Maintain equipment including Instron, Dispergrader, ARES, DIN Abrasion, and others. Calibrate and check all equipment as required. Maintain housekeeping of the rubber lab. 4. Maintain samples in an organized, clearly marked manner with a focus on quality.5. Participation in ISO 9001 audits as requested and required by the business. Ensure all measuring devices under ISO 9001 receive their calibration certificates and record keeping. 6. Working as part of a team to ensure compliance with EH&S safety and housekeeping guidelines.
Minimum Required Qualifications• AS or BS degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, or Engineering degree. • Preferred 0-3 years' experience in a laboratory setting. • Must be flexible and show ability to learn multiple types of silica and rubber testing as needed. • Maintaining an accurate log of all data and experiments• Must be able to wear respirator during some chemical processes. • Handling complex tasks. Must show ability to complete 5-10 tasks that may be associated with a given order without supervision.
Preferred• Experience working in a rubber lab Skills • A high degree of professionalism, excellent communication and presentation skills is very important. • Must have the ability to lead and work with minimal direction. • Creative problem solving and emphasis on quality. • Ability to work with multiple stakeholders that includes Research and Development, Technical Service, and Suppliers is very important.• Computer literacy and knowledge of internet is important.
