Laboratory Research Technician

The research program under the direction of Dr. Flordeliza Villanueva is focused on ultrasound-mediated, image-guided therapeutics using ultrasound contrast agents (microbubbles). They use ultrasound targeted cavitation of intravenously injected microbubbles bearing cell-impermeant therapeutics (e.g. oligonucleotides) to deliver payload specifically to the target site for treatment of cardiovascular disease or solid tumors. The technology is also being developed to transiently open the blood brain barrier for treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Main duties include:Perform acute and survival surgeries in small (mice, rats) and large (rabbits, pigs) animals including insertion of catheters, thoracotomy, coronary ligation, vascular buttons, cremaster muscle preparation for intravital microscopy; Preparation for animals surgeries including sterilization of surgical instruments;Post operative care and maintenance of animals; Assist in preparation of IACUC protocols; maintain compliance with IACUC policies; Assist with data collection and analysis. Job Summary: Performs a variety of independent and complex laboratory work and experiments. Analyzes and interprets data, compiles results, and prepares reports. Maintains inventory, ordering, and logs. Writes manuscripts and grant proposals and prepares data visualizations.Essential Functions: Ability to perform microsurgical procedures in vivo. Experience with animal handling including anesthesia, mechanical ventilations, and survival surgeries Maintenance of accurate records and laboratory notebook; presentation of data Physical Effort: May require long periods of standing, bending or kneeling.Must be able to move lab equipment and animals as needed.
