Librarian II Job Description

The City of Roanoke is seeking a Librarian II to perform related duties by overseeing facility maintenance, security, planning and implementing public outreach activities. The successful candidate will provide customer service in circulation, reference, research, technology, and/or technical services; plan and organize programs and other special activities; take part in readers' advisory and material selection; stay informed of newly published material by means of professional journals, reviews and other sources; and research, innovate, and implement new initiatives to support the Libraries' mission as a place of life-long learning. Master's degree in library and/or information science accredited by the American Library Association (ALA); one to three years related experience and/or training as a professional librarian preferred. SUMMARY

Manage, supervise and coordinate activities of a branch or assigned staff in Library Services.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Develops goals, objectives and performance work plans Provides customer service in circulation, reference, research, technology, and/or technical services. Plan and organize programs and other special activities. Takes part in readers' advisory and material selection; stays informed of newly published material by means of professional journals, reviews and other sources.Research, innovate, and implement new initiatives to support the Libraries' mission as a place of life-long learning. Plans, coordinates, and implements public programs, selects and organize materials, manages library collections, distributes promotional materials and markets services. Meets with schools and community organizations to promote use of library services and conducts other public relations activities.Provides customer service by answering difficult reference inquiries, assisting patrons with research, assisting with the operation of computers and equipment, and recommending reading material using print, non-print and electronic resources. Manages staff by interviewing, hiring, and training, scheduling personnel, verifying time sheets, and providing professional assistance.Participates in team decision-making, staff development, and training. Maintains overall facility/branch functions such as technology, cleanliness, collections, security. Plans and implements public outreach activities. Work schedule will include evenings and weekends SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervises branch or assigned staff in Library Services. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.Typical Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Master's degree in library and/or information science accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) and three or more year's related experience and/or training as a professional librarian with two or more year's supervisory experience preferred. Supplemental Information

Branch Librarian

Research, innovate and implement new programs and materials to support the Libraries' mission. Stay connected with the community and its needs by attending neighborhood meetings, visiting school and daycares and connecting with local churches and organizations. Stays ahead of current technology trends and develop programming and materials to anticipate and support new needs of customers. May supervise library support staff and/or volunteers. Provide outstanding customer service by performing circulation functions, answering reference inquiries, assist patrons with research, assist with the operation of computers and equipment, and recommend reading material using print, non-print and electronic sources. Work directly in a strong team environment with the Director of Libraries on master plan projects, programs and innovative community library services. Preserves indexes and provides assistance to the Library's photograph collection and special collections and archives.
