Police Officer Position
This position is responsible for the maintenance of order, enforcement of laws, and protection of life and property. This position also assists in the investigation of criminal offenses, accidents, and other police-related problems. Essential work functions include performing community patrol, enforcing criminal and traffic laws, arresting offenders, providing first response medical treatment, investigating crime and accident scenes, providing testimony in court, serving as a mental health first responder, ensuring vehicle and equipment are in proper working order, attending ongoing training, coordinating with other shifts and law enforcement agencies, and preparing and maintaining records and reports.Minimum qualifications include a two-year community college degree or vocational school training in police sciences, law enforcement, criminal justice, public administration, or related field, and completion of the basic law enforcement training academy or equivalent. Desirable qualifications include a bachelor's degree in police science, law enforcement, criminal justice, public administration, or related field, one year of experience in law enforcement, fluency in a second language, and knowledge of law enforcement weapons and equipment, safety principles and practices, defensive techniques, physical apprehension, handcuffing, and restraining techniques, geography of the city, effective communication skills, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, orientation towards community policing programs and principles, ability to work independently as well as within a team, and ability to adapt to changes in tasks and responsibilities.Physical demands and work environment include office environment, sitting, standing, walking, reaching, pulling, typing/data entry, talking, hearing, close and distance vision, color vision, depth perception, accommodation, field of vision, hazardous physical conditions, atmospheric conditions, hazardous materials, extreme temperatures, intense noise, travel, environmental, and heavy work.
