Job Description
Under general supervision, performs a variety of work in connection with programs and activities of an aquatic facility, including explaining and enforcing swimming programs and pool policies, regulations, and rules and ensuring the safety of pool patrons; performs rescues and first aid procedures as necessary; and performs related work as required.
Supervision Received and Exercised
Receives general supervision from the Pool Manager, and/or Senior Lifeguard.
Exercises technical and functional direction to Lifeguard staff.
Class Characteristics
This is the journey-level class that assists in performing duties required to ensure that City aquatic facilities are maintained in a safe and effective working condition and provide the highest level of safety for public use.
Responsibilities include the day-to-day supervision of the aquatic facility and oversight of the Lifeguards, in addition to instructing swim classes and performing lifeguard duties.
This class is distinguished from the Senior Lifeguard in that the latter has additional administrative responsibilities related to operating the aquatic facility and development of aquatic programs.
Examples of Duties
Management reserves the rights to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
Supervises lifeguards and other pool personnel during recreation swim and party rentals.
Submits incident, accident, and attendance reports.
Documents employee performance and rule violations, including absent and/or tardy employees.
Assists with hiring, evaluation, and training of aquatic staff.
Teaches swim lessons.
Maintain accurate records and reports.
Patrols the swimming pool and aquatics facility; keeps attentive lookout for accidents in the water or or swimming pool deck; warns people against dangerous practices regarding pool use; Enters water to rescue persons in distress; administers artificial respiration and first aid as needed.
Implements and enforces City policies, rules, and procedures to ensure cleanliness and proper, safe use of facilities and equipment.
Listens and responds to patrons' needs for assistance or information and provides the public with general information in person and over the phone.
Assists in maintenance of the swimming pool; monitors filtration system; and monitors pool water chemistry through testing of samples and adjusts chemistry, including chlorine and PH values, as needed to maintain standards and performs routine pool-area maintenance as required.
Performs rescues, administers basic first aid and adult and/or child cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) as necessary; summons supervisors and emergency personnel as required for injuries or other medical emergencies.
Performs basic custodial duties and routine facility maintenance of the deck, pool, equipment, office, and locker rooms.
Issues and collects recreation equipment and supplies.
Leads and conducts diversified recreation activities, including oversight of community events, birthday parties, water-oriented games, and water exercises; sets up and takes down equipment for facility rentals and community events.
Observes safe work methods and makes appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.
Assist with swim lessons and various aquatic-related programs.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience: Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.
A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth (12) grade and/or one (1) year experience as a Water Safety Instructor, Lifeguard and some experience in competitive swimming or water polo as a participant or in a coaching capacity.
Licenses and Certifications:
Possess and maintain a valid Lifeguard Training Certificate issued by the American Red Cross.
Must obtain American Red Cross First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate for infant, child, and adult within three (3) months of hire; and an AED Certificate with one (1) year of hire.
Knowledge of:
Basic principles and techniques of lifeguarding, adult and/or child cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) methods, and first aid, including rescuer methods as defined by the American Red Cross, National Pool and Waterpark Lifeguard Training Program (NPWLTP), or YMCA.
Basic principles of supervision and training.
Basic principles and techniques of swim instruction.
Methods for keeping water and surrounding areas safe for public use.
Safe handling and use of chemicals related to swimming pool maintenance and care.
Applicable safety precautions and procedures related to the program area(s) and facilities to which assigned.
Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, regulations, ordinances, and organizational policies and procedures relevant to the assigned area of responsibility.
Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications related to the area of assignment.
English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and City staff.
Ability to:
Work independently while supervising facilities and user groups.
Plan, schedule, assign, and oversee activities of Maintenance and Utilities and repair personnel.
Inspect the work of others and maintain established quality control standards.
Train others in proper and safe work procedures.
Teach swimming to aquatics participants.
Perform work in an efficient, effective, safe, and timely manner.
Provide courteous assistance to facility patrons.
Perform water chemistry tests.
Use appropriate safety equipment when handling pool chemicals and equipment.
Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform the assigned duties.
Handle medical emergencies and injuries in a calm and effective manner, including providing basic first aid and/or adult and child cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Maintain facilities and equipment in a clean, safe, and secure manner.
Learn, interpret, and apply administrative and departmental policies and procedures.
