The San Gabriel Community Services Department is seeking motivated, enthusiastic, dedicated, caring, and reliable individuals for the position of Lifeguard-Swim Instructor. The ideal candidate appreciates diversity and works effectively within a diverse community, possesses leadership qualities, has public relations skills, and has a strong desire to serve the community.Job Summary: Under general supervision of the Pool Manager and/or Assistant Pool Manager, the Lifeguard Instructor is responsible for lifeguarding during recreational swim, private pool parties, swim team practices, and swim meets. Incumbents of this position may also be assigned to lead swim exercise and safety classes for children, adults, seniors, and families. Programming takes place year-round. This position may also be responsible for teaching swim lessons should the incumbent possess and/or attain a Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification. Swimming classes are currently offered in the Spring and Summer. Applicants who possess their WSI Certification may be eligible to start at Step B, $19.44 per hour.Typical Qualifications

The following minimum qualifications and requirements must be met for this position: Possession of an American Red Cross Lifeguard / First Aid / CPR / AED Certification within 30 days of hire. Demonstrable experience and familiarity with the basic concepts of water safety programs. At least 16 years of age.The following qualifications and experience are highly desirable: One (1) full summer season of experience working and/or assisting with aquatics programs at Smith Park Pool (San Gabriel), or one (1) year of lifeguarding experience with another public or private aquatic program. Ability to work year-round with full availability for summer season programs.Possession of an American Red Cross Lifeguard / First Aid / CPR / AED Certification and Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification or equivalents prior to hiring. Availability to work Monday - Friday (typically 3:00 P.M. - 7:00 P.M). Supplemental Information

Special Provisions: Paid Training&Certification - The City shall provide and cover the cost of training and certification for applicants who are successfully hired as follows: American Red Cross Lifeguard / First Aid / CPR / AED Training and Certification. American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification for qualified applicants with prior aquatics experience and applicable skills. Note: WSI training will be provided when there is an immediate or anticipated need for WSI certified instructors.Bilingual Pay - Bilingual pay of $0.58 per hour may be provided to employees who pass a proficiency examination in a second language such as Cantonese, Mandarin, Vietnamese, or Spanish. Bilingual pay shall be provided based on the need of the department and approval of the City. Eligibility and need will be determined on a case-by-case basis.PARS Program - Part-Time Employees are required to participate in the Public Retirement Services (PARS) retirement savings/investment program in-lieu of Social Security.
