Job Title: 2nd Shift CNC Horizontal Boring Mill Machinist Job Description This role focuses on operating and setting up a 3-axis CNC horizontal boring mill on 2nd shift in a small, family-style job shop environment. You will perform complete machine setups, make precise offsets and adjustments, interpret G and M code and blueprints, and work with large, delicate castings and steel components. The position requires hands-on involvement from initial setup and first-piece inspection through metrology checks and final part washing in preparation for packing.Responsibilities Perform full setups on CNC horizontal boring mills, averaging approximately two setups per day. Make offsets and adjustments at the machine to ensure parts meet tight tolerances of +/- .005 inches. Read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and work instructions to determine machining requirements.Understand and work with G and M code to run and adjust CNC programs as needed. Change out tooling, including tool holders and inserts, and verify correct tooling for each job. Work with large and delicate castings and steel parts, ensuring careful handling and accurate fixturing. Create and maintain a true position (zero-point) for accurate part location and repeatability.Perform first-piece inspections and verify dimensions using precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and gauge pins. Run metrology checks on parts throughout the machining process to confirm dimensional accuracy and quality. Wash and clean completed parts to prepare them for packing and shipment.Safely operate an overhead crane or hoist to move casings and other large workpieces. Follow job shop machining practices, including handling multiple setups and change-outs per day in a low-volume, high-mix environment. Collaborate with team members and communicate any issues with tooling, programs, or quality.Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area and follow all shop safety procedures. Demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and skill development in CNC machining. Essential Skills

3-5+ years of hands-on experience operating and setting up 3-axis CNC mills in a job shop environment. Proven ability to perform complete setups, change out tooling, and make on-the-fly adjustments at the machine, averaging two setups per day. Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings.Working knowledge and understanding of G and M code for CNC machining. Demonstrated ability to consistently hold tolerances of +/- .005 inches. Experience using precision quality instruments such as micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and gauge pins. Job shop machining experience with multiple setups and change-outs per day.Comfort working with different metal materials, primarily castings and steel. Ability to safely handle and machine large and delicate workpieces. Capability to perform first-piece inspections and in-process dimensional checks. Willingness and ability to work 2nd shift, Monday through Friday, from 3:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m.Additional Skills&Qualifications

Experience operating horizontal boring mills. Familiarity with Fanuc CNC controllers. Experience working specifically with large or delicate components that require careful handling. Hands-on experience with Kizer or Kuraki boring mills. Overhead crane or hoist operation experience for moving large parts and casings.Programming knowledge of G and M code to edit or create CNC programs at the machine. Ownership of personal precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and gauge pins, demonstrating personal investment in the trade. Strong desire to learn, grow, and continue developing skills in CNC machining and horizontal boring mill operations.Background in military service is welcomed as an indicator of discipline, reliability, and teamwork.

The environment requires regular use of precision measuring tools and metrology equipment, as well as safe operation of overhead cranes or hoists to move large casings and parts. The facility maintains a traditional machining shop atmosphere where practical, safety-conscious attire suitable for a machine shop is expected.Job Type&Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Elkhart, IN.
