The Tax Manager will maintain the Company’s Sales and Use tax function for the United States including working with the projects to understand and minimize Sales and Use taxes, prepare and file monthly returns and manage tax audits. The Manager will also need a general knowledge of Federal and State income tax concepts, theories, and principles in order to interact and provide reports and support to the outsourced providers.
The Tax Manager must be able to apply an understanding of the industry to improve effectiveness, provide guidance, and influence processes and policies for the tax discipline as well as identify and resolve technical, operational, and organizational problems that impact effectiveness.
This position is a manager role. The role directly reports to the Head of Tax and routinely interacts with Regional Business Leads / Division Controllers / Project Managers / Accounting / FP&A / Audit / Legal / Compliance / Federal Tax Authorities / State Tax Authorities / Information Technology.
Responsibilities:
Prepare and file monthly sales & use tax returns.
Accumulate, Analyze and process accounting data to prepare returns.
Ensure timely payment of sales and use tax returns.
Analyze invoices for proper tax invoicing.
Interact with project managers regarding taxability of projects.
Work with AP regarding monthly electronic sales and use tax payments.
Assist with gathering data for sales and use tax audits. Assist with managing, planning, and defending sales and use tax audits. Maintain sales and use tax accounts.
Help manage the state income tax provision process, including quarterly accruals, and responding to requests from the external providers and auditor.
Work with outside providers to assure the preparation and timely filing of state income/franchise tax returns, extensions, and estimates for corporate and flow-through entities.
Manage state income/franchise tax audits, by coordinating with the outside service providers in responding to general inquiries and providing written responses to requests.
Manage monthly state income and franchise tax account reconciliations.
Provide solutions to problems, accurately scope projects, and develop practical plans for completion.
Ensure appropriate documentation of working papers and advice.
Manage the preparation of quarterly and annual income tax provisions with the help of outside providers.
Assist in updating and improving technology processes to maximize efficiency and improve close schedule.
Take a leading role in tax software implementation and maintenance.
Work across multiple domestic and international tax areas: Calculation of tax liabilities, tax form preparation, and external filing/reporting.
Conduct Tax research, analysis, and interpretation for purposes of compliance, tax planning, and optimization (e.g. , impact of changes to laws and regulations on tax liabilities, tax structuring for merger and acquisition activity, transfer pricing, etc. ).
Tax-specific transaction recording and records maintenance (e.g. , tax journals, capital expenditure details required for tax calculations, tax depreciation schedules, etc. ).
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, economics, or a related field.
CPA Certification preferred.
Typically, 10+ years of corporate tax experience, preferably in a multinational organization.
Proven expertise in Federal and State Tax Authorities relationship management.
Demonstrated experience managing complex tax transactions.
Experience in working with multiple legal entities under different legal umbrellas.
Previous experience in the energy, construction, or infrastructure sectors preferred.
Expertise in federal and state tax software systems, including OneSource compliance and provision software, ERP platforms (e.g., JD Edwards, Oracle EBS), and consolidation and reporting solutions (e.g., Hyperion, OneStream).
