Role Overview
We are seeking a detail‑oriented and reliable Field Data Collector to support a rail acoustics and condition‑monitoring initiative. The successful candidate will ride the light rail system during normal service and collect noise data using provided recording equipment. In addition to recording, the individual will actively listen for abnormal sounds that may indicate early signs of component wear or failure.
This role is well suited for someone with a strong attention to detail, an interest in mechanical systems, and the ability to follow structured data‑collection procedures in a live transit environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Ride assigned light rail routes to collect train noise recordings using approved recording devices and software.
- Accurately log supporting data such as date, time, train number, vehicle number and route segment.
- Actively listen during operation to identify unusual or abnormal sounds (relating to bearing wear) and flag observations for engineering review.
- Ensure recordings are clear, complete, and stored according to established file‑naming and data‑management standards.
- Follow defined routes and schedules consistently to support repeatable and comparable data analysis.
- Report any equipment issues, safety concerns, or data anomalies promptly.
- Comply with all safety, confidentiality, and data‑handling requirements.

· High attention to detail with the ability to perform repetitive tasks accurately.
· Comfortable using tablets, smartphones, or similar devices, including basic file management.
· Ability to remain focused and observant in a public transit environment.
· Strong written documentation skills for logging observations clearly and consistently.
· Ability to sit or stand on a moving train for extended periods.
Preferred Qualifications
· Mechanical, electrical, or technical background, education, or strong personal interest.
· Experience with audio recording, data collection, inspections, or field work.
· Familiarity with rail vehicles, transit systems, or industrial equipment (asset).
· Ability to recognize abnormal mechanical sounds or patterns (asset)
