Police Officer
The City of Hermosa Beach is a 1.43 square mile, general law City with a population of 19,474. The City is located 22 miles from the Los Angeles Civic Center and 5 miles south of the Los Angeles International Airport, at the heart of the "South Bay" region. The five-member City Council is elected at large. One member of the City Council serves as Mayor on a rotating basis. In addition to the City Council, the City Clerk and City Treasurer are elected to office. The City has a budget of $63 million and approximately 130 full time staff members. The Hermosa Beach Police Department is a full-service organization committed to high quality service to the residents of Hermosa Beach. Each member of the organization is critical to the fulfillment of the law enforcement mission. The Police Department consists of 36 sworn officers and 24 civilian personnel. In addition to the Patrol Bureau, there are the specialized units of Detectives, Motors, Backgrounds and Training. Selection to specialized assignments is based upon a staff member's knowledge, interest, and ability. The Department offers the 3/12 work schedule for patrol officers and the 4/10 schedule for many of the specialized assignments. The Department is very active in providing advanced officer training to encourage career development. The City sponsors a number of special events throughout the year providing many opportunities for extra detail assignments. The Department enjoys a very good relationship with and the confidence of the residential and business community due to quick response times and efforts to solve problems. The Department is looking for outstanding, service-oriented candidates who are passionate about making a difference in the community to join the team.Applicants must complete a City Application form which may be obtained at the City of Hermosa Beach Personnel Department, 1315 Valley Drive, Room 203, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254 or online. City Hall hours are Monday through Thursday 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Applications may be hand delivered, mailed via U.S. mail or emailed.Salary Range: $73,212 to $84,744 per year base salary plus additional educational benefits. Insurance: The City pays up to $1,931.04 per month toward medical insurance. The City pays up to $226.30 toward the cost of dental insurance coverage for the staff member and eligible dependents. The City offers a vision insurance plan but does not contribute to the monthly cost.Term Life Insurance: The City also provides a life insurance policy in the amount of $60,000. Other benefits include: Educational incentive, uniform allowance, and specialty assignment premiums. Retirement: California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) retirement formula is based on appointment date and membership status with CalPERS. The City does not participate in Social Security but does participate in Medicare, which requires a 1.45% contribution by both the staff member and the City.Leave: After appointment to the position of Police Officer, 176 hours per year of Sick Leave; 96 hours of Vacation per year, increasing with longevity. In lieu of holidays, Officers assigned to Patrol receive 112 hours of "Holiday Comp. Time" annually.
