About the Role
We are seeking a strategic, hands-on Controller / Director of Operations for our client in Troy to lead all financial and operational functions.
This is a Direct-Hire opportunity and combines traditional controller responsibilities with oversight of HR, payroll, benefits, and multi-location operations.
As a key member of leadership, this individual will partner closely with partners and board members to ensure financial accuracy, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and long-term growth across three office locations.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Oversight
Lead all accounting operations including general ledger, AP/AR, and financial reporting
Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
Analyze profitability
Develop and manage budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow
Oversee billing (hourly, contingency, and flat fee structures)
Monitor Work in Progress (WIP) and Accounts Receivable (AR) to improve collections
Ensure strict compliance with trust accounting and IOLTA regulations
Manage partner distributions and firm cash flow
Prepare and oversee tax-related filings including business tax returns, ****s, and property taxes
Collaborate with external accounting firm on financial reporting, tax strategy, and compliance
HR, Payroll & Benefits Administration
Process bi-monthly payroll and ensure compliance with all applicable regulations
Manage employee benefits programs (health, dental, 401k, etc.) and support administration of annual bonus programs
Lead recruitment, onboarding, and offboarding processes
Maintain HR policies and ensure compliance with employment laws
Handle employee relation matters, including addressing and resolving employee issues and concerns
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA a plus)
5–10+ years of progressive accounting/finance experience
Manufacturing, Law or professional services experience strongly preferred
Strong knowledge of legal billing, WIP, AR, and trust accounting (IOLTA)
Experience overseeing HR functions, payroll, and benefits
Proven leadership experience, ideally across multiple locations
Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
Compensation & Benefits
Salary range: $75,000 – $115,000+ (based on experience)
