Clinical Pharmacist - Inpatient Nights (7 on/7 off Contract)

Location: Whittier, CA

Key Details:

Setting: Inpatient / Acute Care Hospital Pharmacy.

Schedule: Full-Time Nights, working a 7 days on / 7 days off schedule pattern. This results in alternating 4x10 (40 hours) and 3x10 (30 hours) work weeks, averaging 35 hours/week. The 7-day work block begins on Thursdays.

Shift Time: 8:00 PM - 6:30 AM (2000-0630). Initial orientation may occur during day shifts before transitioning to nights.

Weekends/Holidays: Required when they fall within the scheduled 7-day work block.

Experience Required: Minimum 5 years of recent, progressive experience as a Pharmacist in an Inpatient / Acute Care hospital setting.

Credentials: Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD), Active California Pharmacist License, BLS, ACLS required.

Required Skills: Advanced clinical dosing (Pharmacokinetics, anticoagulation including Warfarin, cardiac, renal, pediatric, geriatric adjustments, therapeutic drug monitoring, high-risk medications), Sterile IV Compounding (IV Piggyback, IV Push), Code Response participation, pharmacotherapy knowledge (Cardiovascular, Neurologic, Psychotherapeutic, Antibiotics), familiarity with automated dispensing (e.g., Carousel system).

Traveler Specifics: First-time travelers accepted if they meet the 5-year inpatient experience requirement ; All Requested Time Off (RTO) must be submitted upfront at the time of application. Local candidate policy not specified (assume non-local preferred or standard radius applies).

Position Summary:

Virtus Healthcare Staffing is seeking a highly experienced and dedicated Clinical Pharmacist for a night shift travel/contract opportunity within the inpatient pharmacy department of our partner acute care hospital in Whittier, CA. This challenging role requires a seasoned pharmacist with a minimum of five years of robust inpatient/acute care experience. The position follows a 7 days on / 7 days off night schedule (8:00 PM - 6:30 AM), starting Thursdays. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive clinical pharmacy services, including complex dosing calculations, sterile compounding oversight, therapeutic monitoring, participation in emergency code response, and serving as a key drug information resource for the night shift team.

Key Responsibilities:

Review, interpret, and verify physician medication orders for therapeutic appropriateness, safety, and efficacy within the inpatient setting.

Provide expert clinical pharmacokinetics (PK) services, including calculating and adjusting dosages for medications requiring therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM), renal dosing, geriatric/pediatric dosing, and managing anticoagulation therapy (including Warfarin).

Oversee and/or perform accurate preparation of sterile intravenous admixtures (IV Piggybacks, IV Push medications) according to USP / standards and institutional policies, ensuring sterile technique.

Actively participate as a member of the code response team (e.g., Code Blue), providing critical medication support and information.

Apply strong clinical knowledge to manage pharmacotherapy for various conditions, particularly cardiovascular, neurologic, and psychotherapeutic medications, as well as appropriate antibiotic selection and monitoring.

Ensure safe handling and management of high-risk medications.

Serve as a primary drug information resource for physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals during the night shift.

Utilize hospital pharmacy information systems, including Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) and Electronic Medical Records (EMR) (system not specified), along with automated dispensing technology (e.g., Carousel System).

Ensure compliance with all relevant state and federal laws, regulations, and hospital policies pertaining to pharmacy practice and medication management.

Work collaboratively with pharmacy technicians and other staff to ensure efficient pharmacy operations overnight.

Required Qualifications:

Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree from an ACPE-accredited College of Pharmacy.

Current and active, unrestricted Pharmacist license issued by the California State Board of Pharmacy.

Minimum of five (5) years of recent, progressive experience working as a licensed Pharmacist within an inpatient hospital / acute care pharmacy setting.

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.

Demonstrated expertise in advanced clinical pharmacy practices, including pharmacokinetic dosing, anticoagulation management, therapeutic drug monitoring, and sterile compounding.

Experience and competency participating in hospital emergency code response.

Strong clinical knowledge base across various therapeutic areas relevant to acute care.

Familiarity with hospital pharmacy operations, including automated dispensing systems.

Must meet the facility's Influenza vaccination requirement (Medical/Religious Exemptions/Declinations considered per policy).

Preferred Qualifications:

Completion of a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency.

Board certification in a relevant specialty (e.g., BCPS - Pharmacotherapy, BCCCP - Critical Care Pharmacy).

Experience with specific hospital EMR systems such as Epic or Cerner.
