Since every duty associated with this position may not be described herein, employees may be required to perform duties not specifically spelled out in the job description, but which may be reasonably considered to be incidental in the performing of their duties just as though they were actually written out in this job description.Equipment Operator Job Summary The purpose of this position is to perform semi-skilled work functions to operate motorized light to medium weight equipment to maintain and repair City grounds, sewers, stormwater conveyance systems, streets, and to provide solid waste collection services. Essential Job FunctionsOperates equipment in one of the following areas: golf course, solid waste, water/sewer, parks, stormwater, and streets. Adheres to established safety procedures; monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; and follows safety practices and wears protective gear.Drives or operates a variety of varied purpose equipment in the maintenance and repair of City streets, rights of way, and parks; performs driving functions in a safe and efficient manner under various conditions, including day/night hours, in congested traffic, and in adverse weather conditions. Conducts pre and post-trip inspections, including checking all fluids, gauges, lighting, mirrors, tires, body damage, seats and seatbelts, cleanliness of vehicle, etc.; reports all problems or necessary repairs to appropriate personnel immediately; completes and maintains inspection, gas usage, and other associated documentation.Performs daily preventive maintenance work on equipment and vehicles; services and makes minor repairs to equipment and vehicles. Performs or assists in performing a variety of maintenance and landscaping duties; repairs sidewalks and curbs; mows grass; cleans storm drains and ditches; patches potholes, shovels stone on roadsides; seals cracks in streets, tars and chips streets; repairs and replaces street signs, etc.Assists with special projects and seasonal work; installs and removes holiday decorations; installs and removes banners; spreads salt on City streets as needed; clears streets and sidewalks of debris following special events; removes and replaces staging materials from sites as needed. Uses a variety of hand tools including shovels, hammers, pick axes, rakes, pipe wrenches, channel locks, transit level, tape measure, and carpentry tools.Prepares or completes various forms, reports, work orders, logs, accident reports, or other documents. Receives various forms, reports, work orders, application instructions, or other documents; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate. Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools, to complete essential functions to include the use of City vehicles. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Equipment Operators assigned to Parks Division perform the following additional duties: Prunes trees and bushes; mows rights-of way, medians, and parks with a Z-Turn Mower.Plants Flowers&Shrubs as directed. Helps Loading/Unloading Trailers with plants and hanging baskets. Pulls weeds and sprays chemicals. Picks up trash. Change Trash Liners in Trashcans. Installs and maintains irrigation systems. Installs and maintains playground equipment. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Equipment Operators assigned to Special Events Division perform the following additional duties:Placing and removing barriers for Special Events Placing and removing Hydros for Special Events Must be available to work additional hours for Special Events Prunes trees and bushes; mows rights-of way, medians, and parks. Pulls weeds and sprays chemicals. Picks up trash. Installs and maintains irrigation systems.Installs and maintains playground equipment. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Equipment Operators assigned to Solid Waste Division perform the following additional duties: Drives garbage truck on assigned route; picks up yard waste, garbage, and recycling and puts in truck. Ensures cleanliness of yard area.Directs traffic and guides truck operator in congested areas. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Equipment Operators assigned to Stormwater Division perform the following additional duties: Repairs stormwater pipes and catch basins. Builds and installs stormwater catch basins. Grades ditches and installs stormwater pipes.* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Equipment Operators assigned to Streets Division perform the following additional duties: Assist in removing, forming, and pouring concrete sidewalks. Assist in patching asphalt roadways. Operates grinder and vacuum to remove trip hazards from concrete sidewalks. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *Equipment Operators assigned to Water/Sewer Division perform the following additional duties: Repairs leak and/or install water and sewer lines. Performs plumbing work. May be required to obtain a class "D" Water Distribution License. Additional Functions Attends meetings, workshops and training as necessary.Assists in preparing for and cleaning up after natural disasters as necessary. Performs other related duties as required, requested and assigned. Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience: Requires a high school diploma or equivalent; no experience required although some experience in equipment operations desired. Licenses or Certifications: Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Special Requirements: None. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of equipment operations. Knowledge of customer service principles. Skill in gathering information before taking action. Skill in using rigorous logic and methods to solve difficult problems with effective solutions. Skill in performing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; counting; recording of counts; and basic measuring.Ability to build rapport. Ability to listen. Ability to look beyond the obvious. Ability to compile, assemble, copy, record and/or transcribe data according to a prescribed schema or plan. Ability to exchange information for the purpose of clarifying details within well-established policies, procedures and standards.Ability to operate and control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials requiring complex and/or rapid adjustments.
