As a Transportation Associate, you support Amazon’s transport operations by moving trailers around the yard, coordinating yard activities, and operating commercial motor vehicles (CMVs), such as hostlers and day cabs, to ensure trailers and freight are positioned correctly and depart on schedule. You’ll also get trained on DOT regulations and may be eligible for paid CDL training if required by the role.
Key Responsibilities
You will:
Prioritize safety by following and enforcing company rules, policies, and DOT regulations for vehicle and yard operations.
Perform yard operations such as:
Moving semi-trailers and coordinating trailer traffic.
Checking in/out trailers, managing trailer placement, and doing yard audits.
Drive and operate commercial vehicles:
Operate hostlers, day cab tractors, and other CMVs on non-public roads and, as required, on public roads during runs between Amazon sites.
Follow schedules and procedures: Track hours, breaks, and abide by DOT and company policies.
Inspect vehicles: Complete driver vehicle inspection reports and report maintenance issues.
Support operations: Work with internal teams and external carriers to maintain yard flow and assist at nearby sites if needed.
Train and grow: Serve as a peer trainer when needed and complete Amazon training programs (e.g., Hostler training, CDL school).
Perform physical tasks: Lift up to 49 lbs, push/pull equipment, stand and walk during long shifts (up to ~12 hours).
Basic Job Requirements
You must have:
Education & License
High school diploma or equivalent.
Valid driver’s license for your state.
Age
At least 21 years old.
Work Hours
Able to work 40 hrs/week, plus overtime as required.
Flexible schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Physical requirements
Lift up to ~49 lbs.
Stand and walk during the full shift, often outside.
Frequent push/pull, squat, bend, and reach motions.
Driving Commitment
Willingness to drive up to ~75 % of working time.
Be prepared to obtain a Driver Qualification File (DQF) and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) if requested by business needs — Amazon often pays for CDL training.
English Proficiency
Ability to understand and adhere to safety guidelines in English.
Preferred / Nice-to-Have Qualifications
Class A CDL already held.
Experience with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
Strong written and interpersonal communication skills.
Ability to enforce safety among yard drivers and vendors.
Experience as a peer driver trainer or in related yard/transport roles.
Employment Conditions & Compliance
If assigned DOT-regulated driving duties (i.e., when obtaining and using a CDL):
Must complete a DOT background check, physical exam, and drug screening.
Comply with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations when operating over public roads with a CDL.
